Today, April 5th, marks Day 1 of the 1,000 day milestone to achieve Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015 target date. Aside being part of the foundation for Sports for Sharing, the MDGs constitute a worldwide push to eradicate extreme poverty, promote universal education, gender equality, combat deadly diseases, increase mortality, foster global relations and environmental sustainability.
Created by the United Nations, it is considered to be the most successful global anti-poverty push in history, claiming to have cut the world’s extreme poverty rate in half. Using the combined global resources, communities, organizations and institutions will celebrate the achievements of the MDG Momentum push on that day, and further assess and advance a post-2015 development framework.
April 5th also kicks off the 1,000 minute awareness rally for the MDGs using online sources such as Twitter. Using the hashtag “#MDGMomentum” you can follow along and interact with fellow supporters in a Twitter rally to raise awareness for the MDGs. It also gives you the opportunity to learn about the goals, read informative materials and promote the MDGs in your own capacity.
